By increasing the AMP/ATP ratio during physical activity, AMPK is activated in human skeletal muscle and, according to New Zealand animal studies, also in adipose tissue, liver, and perhaps other organs. The AMPK pathway is activated to maximise energy production, which promotes processes such as glucose uptake and fatty acid oxidation and decreases energy-consuming functions such as the synthesis of lipids and proteins [2].

Adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase is emerging as a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and CVD (cardiovascular disease), however, further research is needed [3].

The AMPK peptide, has been shown as a master energy sensor, and has been found to be overactivated in the brains of patients with neurodegenerative disorders, suggesting it could play a key role in these diseases. Furthermore, activation of AMPK has been found to attenuate inflammatory pain by inhibiting the level of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β in inflamed skin, suggesting its potential role in pain management. Additionally, AMPK activation has been shown to suppress vascular inflammation, further supporting its role as a potential therapeutic target in managing inflammatory diseases [6].
